Viareggio,
Forte

Marmi,
Seravezza,
Massarosa,
Stazzem,
Camaiore
and
Pietrasanta
with
Marina.
Versilia
is
also
renowned
and
loved
by
us
for
its
history.
In
the
vicinity
of
Camaiore,
human
traces
dating
back
to
as
far
as
40,000
years
ago
have
been
documented.
The
Medici
family
dominated
the
region
from
the
XVIth
century
giving
impulse
to
the
exploitation
of
marble
quarries.
In
the
XVIIIth
century
the
Grand-Dukes
of
Lorena
began
to
cultivate
the
land
so
that
the
then
scarce
population
slowly
began
to
increase
in
number.
In
1784
Grand-Duke
Leopold
I
of
Lorena
granted
fiscal
benefits
to
those
who
chose
to
settle
in
Pietrasanta.
The
marshes
were
drained
and
fully
cultivated
early
XXth
century.
Soon
afterwards,
the
Versilia
coast
reached
its
heyday
as
one
of
Italys
most
fashionable
seaside
resorts,
frequented
by
the
Italian
high
society.
Its
famous
Liberty
style
of
architecture
can
be
seen
in
the
hotels,
villas
and
cafés.
Tuscan
spas
were
also
very
popular
and
have
continued
to
be
recommended
for
health
and
beauty
treatments.
Within
a
few
kilometres
of
Villa
Viviana,
halfway
between
the
Alpi
Apuane
and
the
Versilia
coast,
lies
San
Carlo
spa
and,
on
the
waterfront
of
Forte
dei
Marmi,
in
a
30,000
sq.m
park,
Undulna
spa.
